How a game works

Mining (first two minutes). Mine the guardian parts and remains around the edge for 1 to 3 fragments a swing (5 Mining XP each, up to 250 fragments a game). The large remains past the rubble give 2 to 4. 160 seconds in, and every 140 seconds after, a portal opens for about 25 seconds to the huge remains, which give guardian essence directly (4 to 6 a swing).

Essence. The workbench turns one fragment into one guardian essence each tick, for Crafting XP equal to your Crafting level / 10 (1 to 5). Essence pouches hold guardian essence.

Portal guardians. One elemental (air, water, earth, fire) and one catalytic (mind, body, cosmic, chaos, nature, law, death, blood) guardian are open at a time, and they change every half-minute or so. Step through one to reach its altar; you still need that altar's Runecraft level. Crafting guardian essence there gives the runes (with your multiples) and one guardian stone per essence. Each essence also has a 1/250 chance of a portal talisman, which takes you back to that altar from any guardian. Use the altar's exit portal to return; the blood altar has none, so the rift pulls you straight back once you have crafted.

The Great Guardian. Power it up with your stones: each gives 2 energy of its type (3 for a polyelemental stone), 5 Runecraft XP and 1% run energy. 250 stones per player reach 100%. The energy you give is also yours, up to 1,000 of each type and 1,200 in all.

Creatures, cells and barriers. After the first two minutes, abyssal leeches, guardians and walkers come out of the rift and attack the barriers and the Great Guardian's health; if it reaches 0% the game is lost. Take uncharged cells from the table; crafting at an altar charges one to that altar's tier (weak: air, mind, body; medium: water, cosmic, chaos; strong: earth, nature, law; overcharged: fire, death, blood). Place a charged cell on one of the seven cell tiles to raise, strengthen or heal a barrier, or use it with a chisel on an essence pile to assemble a rift guardian that fights the creatures (up to 10). A destroyed barrier leaves a broken tile, repaired with 12 fragments. At 60% power the rift flares: every barrier takes 50 damage and more guardians and walkers come out.

The end of a game

At 100% the Great Guardian seals the rift, every creature dies, and you have a few seconds to hand in any stones left. With at least 300 energy you earn Runecraft level x 45 XP and points: 1 elemental point per 100 elemental energy and 1 catalytic point per 100 catalytic energy, with the remainder a proportional chance of one more. The game overlay shows the Great Guardian's power and health, the open guardians, the huge-remains portal timer and your energy.

Rewards Guardian

The Rewards Guardian in the lobby takes one elemental and one catalytic point per search (Search, or Big-search for up to five). Check shows your points.

An intricate pouch opens into 150-300 of a high-level rune (astral, blood, chaos, cosmic, death, law, nature or soul), a shield left half, dragon spear, crystal key, dragon med helm or 500-1,000 noted pure essence, with a 1/15 lamp, a 1/10 hard clue, and once each the tarnished locket (1/40) and lost bag (1/60).

Apprentice Felix

Felix in the lobby trades for abyssal pearls. Each Raiments of the Eye piece adds 10% more runes wherever you craft, and the full set adds 60%. Use an abyssal dye on the hat, top or bottoms to recolour it. The ring of the elements can be rubbed to teleport to the air, water, earth or fire altar.
